01 / The Steel
One steel. One hardness. One rule about where the etch stops.
Three decisions we do not change between sets. Everything else on the bench follows
from them.
The alloy, and why 58–60
Every Valoren Forge blade is ground from 9Cr18MoV High Carbon Stainless
Steel and hardened to HRC 58–60. That range is the
whole argument. Softer than 58 and the edge rolls under pressure, so the evening
goes into sharpening instead of carving. Harder than 60 and the steel turns
brittle exactly where carving lives — the last two millimetres of a detail tip.
9Cr18MoV carries high carbon content and high chromium content in the same alloy.
The carbon is what lets the edge take a keen bevel and hold it through a long
session. The chromium is what lets the blade shrug off sap, damp hands and a shop
that gets cold at night. Cutting behaviour you can rely on, without a tool that
needs babysitting.
The etch is the finish, not a decoration
Each blade carries an acid-etched forge pattern across the flat of the
steel only. The bevel and the cutting edge are left polished and
unetched: no texture where the tool meets the wood, no drag through the cut,
nothing between the edge and a clean surface. The pattern is how our blades are
finished, and the quickest way to recognise one across a bench.
Where the etch stops matters. Flat of the blade: etched forge
pattern. Bevel and cutting edge: polished, unetched. It stays that way through
every resharpening you do.
Walnut, shaped for the hand
Handles are walnut in a light brown tone, cut to a palm-swell profile that fills
the hollow of the hand so your grip stops fighting the tool. The logo is
laser-engraved. Every block of practice wood we include is basswood — linden
— kiln-dried to 8–12% moisture and selected knot-free, so the first cut
tells you the truth about your technique instead of about the wood.

A carving tool is a maintained object.
Stainless steel resists corrosion. It does not ignore it. Ten seconds at the end of
a session is the entire routine, and it is the difference between a tool you keep
and a tool you replace.
Strop before you sharpen
A carving edge rarely goes blunt. It goes rounded. Stropping realigns it long
before it needs a stone, which is why the strop lives on the bench and the stone
lives in the drawer.
Load the compound side of the strop with the supplied compound
Draw the blade spine-first, edge trailing, about ten passes per side
Finish on the bare leather side to polish the bevel
Wipe the blade clean before it goes back into the wood
Keep the water off it
9Cr18MoV is a stainless alloy and handles a workshop far better than a plain
carbon steel would. It is still steel. Sap, sweat and a blade left wet will
eventually leave a mark.
Dry the blade after every session, sap included
Never leave a blade soaking, and never put one in a dishwasher
Thin film of beeswax balm on the steel before long storage
The same balm feeds the walnut handle; sealed plastic bags trap damp, so skip them
The stone, and where the tools live
Reach for the dual-grit stone only when stropping stops bringing the edge back.
For most carvers that is a handful of times a year, not a weekly ritual.
Coarse grit to reset a damaged edge, fine grit to refine it
Follow the bevel angle that is already there; do not grind a new one
Keep the bevel polished — the etched pattern belongs on the flat
Roll the tools away with edges apart, somewhere dry

Every blade is sharpened and checked with a paper-cut test before it is
packed, bevel polished and unetched. If yours arrives with an edge that will
not cut cleanly out of the box, that is on us.
Free of manufacturing defects
A walnut handle that splits or works loose, a chip in an edge that was not
your doing, a grind that is not true: ours to replace, not yours to live with.

Normal dulling from use, rust on a blade that was stored wet, and damage from
